The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) would commence the issuance of new Certificate of Competency/Proficiency with enhanced security features at the end of February 2022, the organisation has said.
A public notice from the Authority to Seafarers, Shipowners, Agents, Seafarer Recruitment and Placement Service Providers stated that it has stopped the issuance of the existing certificates to new applicants except in cases where they are urgently needed for seafarers to join vessels.
According to the organisation, seafarers with expired certificates maybe granted an extension for a year if they provide proof that it is needed to facilitate joining ship.
Part of the notice read;
“The Ghana Maritime Authority hereby informs the Maritime Community especially Seafarers, Shipowners and Agents and Seafarer Recruitment and Placement Service Providers that in our effort to enhance the security features of the certificates of competency/proficiency, the GMA shall commence the issuance of new certificate booklets by the end of February 2022.
“Further to the above, the Authority has halted the issuance of the existing certificates to new applicants except on urgent basis which shall be determined by the availability of a contract to join a vessel.
“Seafarers holding existing certificates that have expired maybe granted extension for a year to facilitate their joining ship.”
