Women In Maritime Africa (WIMA), Nigeria Chapter has elected Mrs Rollens Macfoy as the new President of the association.
This development is following the group’s Annual General Meeting and election, which took place in Lagos on Tuesday, October 12, 2021.
Mrs Rollens Macfoy who runs Ocean Deep Maritime Academy contested for the Presidency of the association against Mrs Obiageli Obi, the immediate past Director General, Nigerian Chamber of Shipping.
Mrs Ify Akerele, member of the Council at the Nigerian Chamber of Shipping, as well as an Ambassador of Women in Maritime Africa was the Head of the electoral committee, which supervised and coordinated the electoral proceedings.
Announcing results of the exercise, Akerele who counted the votes publicly announced that one vote was void while Macfoy polled 26 votes to defeat Obi who had 20 votes.
In her remarks, Mrs Ify Akerele expressed the need for women in the maritime industry to conduct their businesses as professionals, maintaining a high level of integrity.
She commended the good work of the past executives, noting their favourable disposition to Corporate Social Responsibility in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic.
She urged women to join the association and support the new executive to succeed.
In her acceptance speech, the newly elected President, Mrs Rollens Macfoy commended the electoral committee and the Continental body present at the election ground for ensuring the election was free and fair.
“I appreciate the members present, whether you voted for me or not, the issue now is that WIMAfrica Nigeria most go forward.
“I pledge to take reasonable counsel from different authorities and I will deliver and will take the association to the next level.
“I thank all the contestants for having the courage to step out,” she said.
Mrs Carol Ufere, former Public Relations Officer and the Continental coordinator of WIMAfrica tasked the new executives on collaborating with members and other sister associations.
She urged them not to lose the vision and the objectives of the association as the expectation is to have the association attain greater heights and to always speak with one voice.
The Continental President of WIMAfrica, Mrs Jean Chiazor Anishere, congratulated the new executive council led by Mrs Rollens Macfoy.
“I am extremely excited that those who are qualified, well-skilled and dedicated members are those who turned up to win at the polls today.
My appreciation to God for the professional way by which the Ambassadors of Nigeria who were appointed by General Assembly to be members of the officiating board that conducted the election.
” I congratulate Rollens Macfoy who served as Secretary during my tenure as president of WIMAfrica and during the tenure of the immediate past president, she served as the Vice president.”
” Macfoy has been very dedicated to the idea of WIMAfrica Nigeria in general,” the Continental president stated.
