Seventeen years old Abiola Ogunbanwo representing Nigeria at the 2020 Olympics  has set a new national record at the Tokyo Aquatic Centre,  winning heat 1 of the women’s  100m freestyle at the ongoing Tournament.

Ogunbanwo is the first Nigerian woman to go under the one minute mark. surpassing Ngozi Monu’s long standing record of 1:15m achieved during the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.
The Australian based  teen was born on April 19, 2004. She competed in two events at the 2018 FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) held in Hangzhou, China and  represented Nigeria at the 2019 World Aquatics Championship which held in Gwangju, South Korea.
She also competed in the women’s 100 metre freestyle and 200 metre freestyle competition, but she did not advance to the semi finals.
Ogunbanwo emerged the first Nigerian woman to finish at 0.27 seconds beating Andela Antunovic of Montenegro to 1: 00. 01 and Gaurika Singh of Napal came third with 1:00. 11.
