A general cargo ship BBC Caribbean was attacked by pirates in Gulf of Guinea on 45 nautical miles south-west off Brass, Nigeria.
The accident happened near Pennington Oil Terminal at Nigerian Delta, when the cargo ship was approached by motor skiff with armed men on board.
The pirates succeeded to board the ship and took control, kidnapping eight seamen.
The local authorities reported that the pirates have kidnapped seven Russians and one Ukrainian crew from the cargo ship the BBC Caribbean.
The pirates with the hostages abandoned the vessel into the motor skiff and headed to the shore.
The ship proceeded in western direction with destination “to order” and reported the accident to the local authorities. The navy failed to trace the pirates, but initiated investigation for the accident.
“The armed pirates approached (the vessel) in a boat, captured the crew and left on the boat at the direction of the Nigerian shores”, said Pavel Fedulov, the director of a Briese Schiffahrts subsidiary in St Petersburg, which managed the cargo ship.
The general cargo ship BBC Caribbean (IMO: 9378242) has overall length of 116.00 m, molded beam of 16.00 m and maximum draft of 5.00 m.
The deadweight of the ship is 6,229 DWT and the gross tonnage is 5,261 GRT. The vessel was built in 2008 by Xinhe Shipbuilding Heavy Industry in Tianjin, China.
The owner and manager of the general cargo ship is Briese Schiffahrt, while the operator is BBC Chartering.
